Akutaq is not one standardized recipe. Alaska Native Knowledge Network materials describe versions made with berries, fish, meat, fat, seal oil, and other local foods, with ingredients and methods varying by family, community, season, and region. The common English label "Eskimo ice cream" appears in many older sources, but this archive leads with akutaq and uses the older label only as a search aid or historical note. Because the dish belongs to living Alaska Native foodways, The Melting Pot records context without presenting a definitive recipe until an Alaska Native contributor or cultural advisor approves a version for publication.
