Avocado toast became a 2010s internet symbol, but the idea is much older than the meme. California newspapers and avocado growers were recommending avocado on toast in the early 20th century, and avocado on bread or tortillas has long histories across Latin America. The modern American version belongs to coffee shops, brunch menus, and social media: good bread, ripe avocado, acid, salt, and just enough garnish to make a simple thing feel finished.
